Palazzo Massaini can be found just over 4 kilometres from Pienza, spreading over the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park, a UNESCO world heritage site since 2004 – a prime location for its beauty, history and culture. It boasts an extraordinary view that seems frozen in time. Here the shapes and colours of nature change with the seasons, suggestive of the harmony shown in the Sienese School of painting.

The farm

The origins of Palazzo Massaini date to around 1200 when it was built by Bibbiano Cacciaconti, a member of the aristocratic Asciano family.
In the 16th century, the building was converted into a “villa” and a wing was added, as well as an elegant little loggia in the courtyard and understated cornices to the gates.
Amongst the many owners it would have over time, we have one Pope – Enea Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464), who became Pope Pius II in 1458. The coats of arms of the Piccolomini family are evident inside the Castle, especially the so-called “light blue cross with the moons of God”.
Today the architectural complex features an Italian garden which spreads to the east of the villa.

The accommodation

The Cavarciano and La Pieve farmhouses are located inside the estate that spreads over more than 300 hectares. Made from sandstone, these two farmsteads have been renovated and converted into holiday farmhouses.
At around 500 metres from Palazzo Massaini you find another farmhouse that has been renovated to house an agritourism: the “La Pieve” farmhouse. The building has two separate apartments for its guests, each of which can accommodate 6 guests in their 3 double rooms – all with ensuites – while the kitchen has all the home comforts you could need and the living room features a fireplace. The rooms below – used as wineries, grain stores and stalls in the past – have been renovated and now host parties and dinners. The farmhouse boasts an outdoor pool, a garden and offers free bike rental.
The origins of this farmhouse stretch far back into the past. It was recently renovated and converted into an agritourism, offering guests a stunning view that is framed by olive groves and forests. It is located close to Palazzo Massaini and can be reached on foot. The building has 7 comfortable and modern apartments with their own entrances. They can accommodate up to 18 people at any one time, with bed and breakfast in single rooms or apartments with kitchens available. The farmhouse also has a large garden and offers free bike rental.

Activities and surroundings

alazzo Massaini can be found just over 4 kilometres from Pienza, spreading over the rolling hills of the Val d’Orcia Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park, a UNESCO world heritage site since 2004 – a prime location for its beauty, history and culture
Medieval castles, sinuous gills, ancient villages, gorgeous farmhouses, isolated homesteads, roads lined with cypress trees, fabulous vineyards and olive groves and golden fields of grain and sunflowers: these are just some of the elements that form the fantastic and harmonious landscapes of the Val d'Orcia. This rich green valley, which encompasses the Orcia river and where it derives its name, is in southern Tuscany, stretching between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto. The entire area is protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Time seems to slow down in picturesque towns like Pienza, a real jewel known as the "Ideal City" with its beautiful Palazzo Piccolomini. The small town of Castiglion d'Orcia with its fortress seems to take you back in time. At the furthest southernmost point, there is the hilltop town of Radicofani with its imposing castle tower, and if you go west, you arrive at the walled medieval city of Montalcino and the vineyards for making Brunello wine. A must-see is the beautiful and suggestive Romanesque Abbey of Sant' Antimo, one of the best examples of medieval monastic architecture remaining.
After a day visiting museums, ancient abbeys and castles, you can relax in one of the many thermal hot springs of the region, such as the ones in Bagno Vignoni or in Bagni di San Filippo..

Olive groves and vineyards for as far as the eye can see – but that’s not all! Complete immersion in nature, a breathtaking view, and tasting sessions of the wine and olive oil that you can buy right there or on the Palazzo Massaini website. The vine groves are cultivated on sloping, deep, silty-clayey soil at altitudes between 400 and 500 metres, extending for around 12 hectares. A little under 11 hectares are Sangiovese vines (red grapes), while the rest is divided equally between Merlot (red grapes) and Trebbiano/Malvasia (white grapes).
The olive groves are spread over uneven, sloping terrain at altitudes between 400 and 500 metres, taking up around 15 hectares. They are divided into 4 areas: the olive groves “below the Palazzo” (Pienza side), the Cavarciano olive groves, the La Pieve olive groves, and the La Renaia Farmhouse olive groves.
Palazzo Massaini is also home to Bottega Verde, a leader in natural cosmetics. Palazzo Massaini symbolises Italy’s Mother of Nature, the inspiration behind all its products. It is this extraordinarily beautiful place that gives life to the exclusive Uva Rossa, Olivo and Avena cosmetic lines and the red grapes, olives and oats that they contain are grown right here, in this magical corner of the world..
