Val di Merse is an untouched land included between the Clay hills and the Maremma planes, rich of brooms, holm oaks and chestnut trees. In Val di Merse there are thermal spa centres with warm waters like the famous Terme di Petriolo, Pope Pious XII's favourite, but also some natural parks, like the Alta Val di Merse one. It is also easy to discover some unforgettable corners if you like riding a bike, as there are many cycle tracks, but it is also good to explore these medieval villages on a horse, or tasting the great meat and the mushrooms in a good osteria. This land is known everywhere thanks to the presence of San Galgano Abbey, with three large naves, a floor made of grass and a roof made of sky. In the nearby Church of Montesiepi, there is the large rock where San Galgano planted his sword,whose cross-shaped handle is still visible: a Sienese version of the ''sword in the stone''. The Colline Metallifere are far in the distance, with Radicondoli, an old town founded by the Lombard king Desiderio. Near the village of Rosia, the medieval Ponte della Pia, a bridge in memory of Pia dei Tolomei, was named after the gentlewoman who apparently walked this road to be taken to Maremma to be exiled after being unfaithful to her husband.
One of the best examples of Romanic style in Italy is the Abbey of Sovicille, Ponte allo Spino. A splendid three-nave church with the remains of the cloyster from a Gothic church. And Casole d'Elsa was for many centuries a border land: it had to suffer two very long sieges by the Florentine, during which the first bombarding of history took place, in the year 1478. Murlo is a land of people Etruscan testimonies of the Etruscan origins of the town can be seen at the local Museum "Antiquarium of Poggio Civitate" in the historical center.
